Why we read celebrity charts

Reading the natal charts of public figures is a distinct genre in astrology. It isn't "fortune-telling on the stars" — it's a check of chart structure against known facts of a biography. When a person's life is public enough that you can verify the key moments (birth, marriage, divorce, career breakthroughs), the chart becomes a falsifiable model.

In this article we read 10 public people. All charts are built from open dates and places of birth; the birth time, for most of them, is known from biographical interviews or has been rectified by astrologers from life events.

What we do NOT do:

  • We don't grade the person "good" or "bad." A chart isn't a moral category.
  • We don't predict death, illness, or personal relationships beyond what's already public.
  • We don't use non-public information about health or private life.

What we do do:

  • We look at which structural elements of the chart line up with the known traits of the public personality.
  • We explain through which configurations the well-known public roles come through.
  • We use these readings as examples — so you can look at your own chart through the same lens.

Barack Obama — 08/04/1961, Leo

44th president of the United States, born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sun sign — Leo. Ascendant per various sources — Aquarius or Leo (his exact birth time was long debated; the accepted time of 19:24 gives an Aquarius rising).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Leo — public role, need for the stage, natural-born leader.
  • Aquarius rising — an open face for a wide audience, a reformer's image, "not like the others" but still legible to the masses.
  • Mercury in Leo — theatrical speech, narrative-driven, fond of big formulas ("Yes, we can").
  • Venus in Cancer — care, family as a central theme, the "father of the family" image.
  • Mars in Virgo — action through analysis, precision, discipline. Not impulsive.
  • Moon in Gemini — flexibility, many-sidedness, the ability to talk to different audiences.

What this explains about the public role: the "Leo + Aquarius" axis is "the leader-reformer" — a man on the stage who simultaneously promises change. Mercury in Leo gives the ability to speak in large images. Jupiter in Leo amplifies the Sun — luck on the public stage.

Steve Jobs — 02/24/1955, Pisces

Co-founder of Apple, born February 24, 1955 in San Francisco. Sun sign — Pisces. Ascendant — Virgo (per rectification, exact time 19:15).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Pisces — dreamer, visionary, the ability to see "the unattainable."
  • Virgo rising — outwardly precise, analytical, perfectionist. Contrast with the inner Piscean fluidity.
  • Mercury in Pisces — imagistic thinking, sometimes poetic ("Stay hungry, stay foolish").
  • Venus in Aries — love of simple, clean forms, minimalism with energy.
  • Mars in Aries — sharp, direct, uncompromising action. The famous "reality distortion field" in the office.
  • Saturn in Scorpio in the 3rd house — deep, serious thinking with the theme of "controlling the word."

What this explains about the role: Sun in Pisces + Virgo rising = the visionary who knows how to convert a dream into a precise product. Venus and Mars in Aries give the energy of attack and a love of simplicity — hence Apple's minimalist design.

Bill Gates — 10/28/1955, Scorpio

Co-founder of Microsoft, born October 28, 1955 in Seattle. Sun sign — Scorpio. Ascendant — Gemini (per rectification, time 21:15).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Scorpio — deep power, strategic thinking, capacity for the long game.
  • Gemini rising — outwardly light, curious, many-sided. Contrast with the Scorpio.
  • Mercury in Libra — a balanced mind, able to see "from multiple angles."
  • Venus in Scorpio — deep attachment to details, passion for work.
  • Mars in Libra — action through negotiation, not attack.
  • Jupiter in Leo in the 4th house — luck through family, home, roots.

What this explains about the role: the Scorpio Sun gives the capacity to think strategically and play long-term — what distinguishes Gates as a businessman. Gemini rising allows easy communication with different audiences ("the intellectual"). Venus in Scorpio — hence the decades-long concentration on one theme (Microsoft for 30+ years, then the Gates Foundation).

Angelina Jolie — 06/04/1975, Gemini

Actor, director, humanitarian activist, born June 4, 1975 in Los Angeles. Sun sign — Gemini. Ascendant — Cancer (time 09:09).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Gemini — many-sidedness, capacity for several roles at once (actor + director + activist + mother of many).
  • Cancer rising — outwardly emotional, care as an image (adopted children, humanitarian work).
  • Mercury in Gemini — sharp, quick mind.
  • Venus in Cancer — love of family, home, care.
  • Mars in Aries — direct action, sometimes "too direct." Hence the sharp public statements.
  • Moon in Aries — explosive, impulsive emotion.

What this explains about the role: Gemini Sun + Cancer rising = "many-sided star + caring mother." This duality is visible in her public life: one hand makes blockbusters, the other does humanitarian work in conflict zones. Venus and Mercury in Gemini — hence the ability to switch between roles.

Leonardo DiCaprio — 11/11/1974, Scorpio

Actor, producer, environmental advocate, born November 11, 1974 in Los Angeles. Sun sign — Scorpio. Ascendant — Libra (time 02:47).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Scorpio — depth, intensity, capacity for complex roles.
  • Libra rising — a charming face, balance, diplomacy.
  • Mercury in Scorpio — penetrating thought, often "through the subtext."
  • Venus in Scorpio — passionate attachment, seriousness in relationships.
  • Mars in Cancer — action through care, protection, sometimes a "maternal instinct."
  • Jupiter in Pisces — luck through creativity, art, sometimes "magical" stories.

What this explains about the role: Scorpio Sun + Libra rising = "deep artist with a charming face." The capacity to take heavy roles (Gatsby, Gilbert Grape, the Quaalude scene in Wolf of Wall Street) — that's Scorpio. Venus in Scorpio is famous from his public romantic life — long, intense relationships. Mars in Cancer + Jupiter in Pisces — that's the environmental advocacy ("care as action").

Kanye West — 06/08/1977, Gemini

Rapper, producer, designer, born June 8, 1977 in Atlanta. Sun sign — Gemini. Ascendant — Leo (time 08:45).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Gemini — many-sidedness, capacity for different projects (music + fashion + sneakers).
  • Leo rising — a stage personality, a need for visibility.
  • Mercury in Gemini — quick, associative mind, capable of paradoxes.
  • Venus in Taurus — love of aesthetics, material beauty, brand.
  • Mars in Pisces — action through intuition, sometimes chaotic.
  • Moon in Pisces — fluid, strong, sometimes "uncontrollable" emotion.

What this explains about the role: Gemini Sun + Leo rising = "multiple stages." A strong public image plus the ability to reinvent. Moon and Mars in Pisces explain the emotional "spikes" in his public life (the bipolar diagnosis he himself acknowledged) — these positions are often linked with emotional instability when not actively worked on.

Rihanna — 02/20/1988, Pisces

Singer, founder of Fenty Beauty, born February 20, 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados. Sun sign — Pisces. Ascendant — Scorpio (time 08:25).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Pisces — artistry, emotional depth, capacity for universal empathy.
  • Scorpio rising — powerful image, magnetism, passion.
  • Mercury in Pisces — imagistic, poetic thinking.
  • Venus in Pisces — love of beauty, fluidity, aesthetics.
  • Mars in Sagittarius — entrepreneurial, expansive energy.
  • Jupiter in Gemini — luck through speech, brand, many-sidedness.

What this explains about the role: Pisces Sun + Scorpio rising = "deep singer + strong brand." Pisces gives the musicality; Scorpio gives the production muscle. Mars in Sagittarius — hence the business expansion (Fenty and Savage X Fenty becoming global brands). A good example of how a Pisces chart isn't "necessarily dreamy and unworldly" — here Pisces works beautifully in commerce.

Beyoncé — 09/04/1981, Virgo

Singer, actor, producer, born September 4, 1981 in Houston. Sun sign — Virgo. Ascendant — Libra (time 14:30).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Virgo — perfectionism, work on detail, quality control.
  • Libra rising — an aesthetic image, balance, grace.
  • Mercury in Virgo — precise, analytical thinking.
  • Venus in Libra — love of beauty, diplomacy, value of relationships.
  • Mars in Libra — action through negotiation, not attack.
  • Moon in Scorpio — deep emotional power, sometimes hidden.

What this explains about the role: the Virgo Sun gives perfectionism — every show is designed to the millimeter. Venus and Mars in Libra — hence the team work and the balance with Jay-Z. Moon in Scorpio — the emotional depth visible on her serious albums (Lemonade). "Discipline as engine" shows up in every project.

Anna Wintour — 11/03/1949, Scorpio

Editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988, born November 3, 1949 in London. Sun sign — Scorpio. Ascendant — Pisces (time 12:10).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Scorpio — strategic thinking, control, capacity for tough decisions.
  • Pisces rising — outwardly aesthetic, mystical, sometimes "inaccessible."
  • Mercury in Scorpio — a sharp mind that goes straight to the core.
  • Venus in Scorpio — deep taste, seriousness in choices.
  • Mars in Scorpio — action through concentration, control.
  • Jupiter in Capricorn in the 11th house — expansion through community, status, hierarchy.

What this explains about the role: the concentration in Scorpio (Sun + Mercury + Venus + Mars) gives a rare intensity of character. That explains her famous "icy" efficiency as editor-in-chief. Pisces rising — hence the "inaccessible" image and the aesthetic talent. Jupiter in Capricorn in the 11th — hence the influence on the industry through status and network.

Linda McCartney — 09/24/1941, Libra

Photographer, musician, activist (died 1998), born September 24, 1941 in New York. Sun sign — Libra. Ascendant — Scorpio (time 10:00).

What the chart shows:

  • Sun in Libra — aesthetics, balance, love of beauty.
  • Scorpio rising — a deep image, intensity.
  • Mercury in Virgo — precise, analytical mind (visible in her photography — she documented the 1960s rock scene).
  • Venus in Scorpio — serious, long-term relationships.
  • Mars in Taurus — action through the material, earth, nature.

What this explains about the role: Libra Sun + Scorpio rising = "aesthete with depth." You can see it in her photography — beautiful compositions but with psychological depth in the portraits. Venus in Scorpio — hence her long marriage to Paul McCartney (one of the most famous long marriages in the music industry).

What public people have in common

If you look at all 10 charts, several recurring traits stand out:

  1. A strong 10th house or MC. All of these people have a significant planet in the career sector of the chart or a strong MC.
  2. An active public configuration. Often Jupiter or a strong Sun in Leo/Aries, or a Mercury that supports public speech.
  3. A specific signature. Not "everything at once" but a specific archetype: visionary (Jobs), strategist (Gates), stage presence (Obama), artist (Rihanna).
  4. Discipline. Often — a strong Saturn or Virgo in the chart, giving the capacity to work long.
  5. A unique angle. Uranus or some non-standard configuration that makes them stand out.

Important: having these configurations does not guarantee public visibility. Thousands of people with the same configurations live ordinary lives. But public people usually have at least some of the above.

And your Scorpio — is it the same?

If your Sun is in Scorpio, like Gates, DiCaprio, or Wintour — it does not mean you'll be the same. The sign is 1/12 of the picture. Beyond it:

  • What's your ascendant? (Gates — Gemini, DiCaprio — Libra, Wintour — Pisces. Completely different manifestations of Scorpio.)
  • Where's your Moon? (All the Scorpios on this list have different Moons, and that produces completely different temperaments.)
  • In which house does your Scorpio Sun sit? (10th — Gates, 1st — Wintour, 4th — DiCaprio.)
  • What aspects to the Sun? (Jupiter? Saturn? Pluto?)

So the line "you're a Scorpio, like Gates" is astrology pop. The reality: you have a Sun in Scorpio with your own Moon, ascendant, houses, and aspects — and that's a unique configuration that doesn't fully match anyone.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can a natal chart predict that someone will become famous?

You can see potential: a strong 10th house, an active MC, configurations that support public visibility. But there's no guarantee. Thousands of people with the same configurations live ordinary lives. Fame is a combination of chart potential, era, luck, persistence, and work. The chart shows possibility, not a "sentence to fame."

If I have the same sign as a celebrity, will I be like them?

Only in the general outlines of 1 of 12 parameters. The Sun sign is 1/12 of the picture. Beyond it you have your own ascendant, your own Moon, your own houses, your own aspects. Gates and DiCaprio are both Scorpios — one is a tech-and-philanthropy person, the other is an actor-environmentalist. The sign does not define the life.

Where do celebrity birth times come from?

From different sources. Official biographies, interviews with the person, sometimes — data from public records (in the U.S. especially). When the time is unknown, astrologers do rectification: they calculate the time from key life events. In this article we note where the time is precisely known and where it's been rectified.

Steve Jobs's natal chart — why is it so accurate?

Not "accurate" in itself — it matches the biography. Pisces (visionary) + Virgo rising (perfectionist) + Aries Mars (uncompromising) are archetypes that explain Jobs's well-known traits. If Jobs had, say, a Taurus rising, his company would probably look different (more materially stable, less minimalist).

Why read the charts of dead people?

They are verifiable: the entire life is known. With a living person you can "guess" coincidences. With a deceased person you can compare a complete life path with what the chart showed at the start. That's the best way to verify that astrology works not as "fortune-telling about the future" but as diagnostics of structure. The charts of McCartney and Steve Jobs (died in 2011) are material for learning and verification.

Where can I find my favorite celebrity's chart?

Databases. The Astro-Databank (Rodden database) contains thousands of verified celebrity charts with a reliability category for the birth time (AA — officially documented, A — from the person's own account, B — biography, C — rectification). It's the most authoritative source you can turn to.
