Moon sign today

Where the Moon is right now, when she changes sign, and what phase she is in.

All times are Moscow time (UTC+3). Russia has not shifted its clocks since 2014, so the offset is the same in winter and in summer: to get UTC, subtract three hours. The dates and times on this page are not typed into the text by hand: they are calculated from the ephemeris by the same engine that builds our birth charts, and recalculated every time the page refreshes.

Why “today” is not always one sign

The Moon crosses all twelve signs in 27.3 days and lingers in each for about two and a half — more precisely, from 2.0 to 2.7 days, because her speed along the orbit varies. She is the fastest point in the chart: while the Sun takes a whole month to cross one sign, the Moon gets all the way round the circle.

Hence the built-in imprecision of the question “what sign is the Moon in today”. The Moon changes sign at a specific minute, and on the day of the change there are two correct answers: one sign before that minute, another after it. That is why the top of the page gives not only the sign but the moment of the change, with a week's schedule below it. If you are checking against your own chart, go by your time of birth rather than the date: two people born on the same day can have the Moon in different signs.

The Moon's sign is responsible not for character but for the texture of the day: what it is comfortable to do, how it is easiest to rest, what is simpler to agree on. The Moon in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) means quicker reactions and more drive; in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), calmer and more practical; in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), more talking and exchange; in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), deeper feeling and more weight on context. It is a backdrop, not a script.

The degree shows how far the Moon has moved through the sign: 0° means she has only just arrived, 29° that she is about to leave. The last degree of a sign is traditionally called “restless”: a decision made in it often has to be revisited once the Moon is in the next sign. The degree is also what tells you whether today's Moon touches your chart: if she passes within two or three degrees of one of your planets, it is felt more strongly than usual.

Phase and illumination are about the Moon's relationship with the Sun, not with the sign. Illumination of 0% is a new moon, 100% a full moon; in between, the disc waxes and wanes by 12–15% a day. The phase is the same for the whole planet, and so is the sign: neither depends on where you are. Geography changes only the reading on the clock, and here that clock is Moscow's.

Common questions

What sign is the Moon in today?
The sign and degree are in the card at the top of the page: they are calculated at the moment you open it, not taken from a ready-made table. If today is a changeover day, the same card gives the time at which the Moon changes sign.
Why does my app show a different Moon sign?
Usually it is one of two things. The first is the time zone: if the Moon changed sign overnight, “today” means different signs in different zones. The second is the zodiac: we calculate in the tropical one, as all of Western astrology does, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal, where positions are shifted by about 24 degrees — nearly a whole sign.
How long does the Moon stay in one sign?
From 2.0 to 2.7 days, on average about 2 days 5 hours. The spread comes from the elliptical orbit: near perigee the Moon covers up to 15.4 degrees a day, near apogee 11.8, while a sign is always exactly 30 degrees.
How is today's Moon sign different from the Moon in my chart?
The transiting Moon is a backdrop shared by everyone, and it changes every couple of days. The Moon in your chart is a fixed position at the moment of birth, and it describes how your emotions are built, not what today is like. The two signs coincide roughly once a month, and it usually feels like “the day I am finally in my element”.
How often is this page updated?
At least once an hour. The Moon covers about half a degree an hour, so in that time neither the sign nor the phase can change without being noticed.

And where was the Moon on the day you were born?

The sign and degree of your natal Moon describe how your emotions, your habits and your way of recovering are put together. Calculated from your date, time and place of birth.
